School Demographics

Picture
St Francis Xavier Catholic Primary School is situated in the western suburbs of Mackay, a city of approximately 100,000 people. Established in 1935 by the Sisters of Mercy, St Francis Xavier is one of eight Catholic Primary schools serving the coastal region of Mackay.

With 21 classes from Prep to Year 6, St Francis Xavier has an approximate enrolment of 550 students. Around 12% of the students are second and third generation attendees. Each year, classes are reconfigured to ensure that they are very similar in terms of gender, ability and behaviour. Year 6 students generally go on to attend Mercy College to complete their high school studies.

Families with children attending St Francis Xavier come from a variety of backgrounds. They are generally middle to upper class members of the community. Three quarters of our parent body have gone on to further education through either Technical Colleges or University. Many of our families live within a 10km radius of the school.

Many families depend on the mining industry for employment. In recent years, with the influx of medical professionals and the school being located close to Mackay Base Hospital, there has been an increased enrolment of students from several cultures, with many of them speaking English as a second language.
